Installation Steps
Step 1. Fence layout and positioning of posts
1. Determine where your property line is.

2.

Use the sample fence layout plan to help understand a typical fence layout. This layout will give you an idea of what you might need for your fence project (see drawing 1).

3.

Use a string line to locate the fence line. Ensure square corners with the 3-4-5 triangle method. Stakeout the post locations for the fence style you've selected.

4.

Remember - Consider soil conditions, slope, utility locations and property lines when positioning posts.

The 3-4-5 Triangle method
The 3-4-5 triangle method--You can create a right angle simply by employing the following procedure: (see drawing 2). Measure out two pieces of string or straight edge that can be pulled straight and that measure 3 and 4 feet long. these will be the two "short" legs of your right triangle, so lay them down is as close to a right angle as you can get by just eyeballing them. Take a third piece of string or board or what have you, and measure it to 5 feet long. Make this last piece the "long" leg of the triangle. Once you get everything arranged neatly, if your legs a 3, 4, and 5 feet long, you'll have a right angle.
